Case Study | MIMO Communication TransceiverThe embedded hardware platform selection is a critical task which requires the proper understating of the end application processing requirements, accurate development time estimates, ease of operation and maintenance from end user perspective etc. One of our customers came-up with the requirement of embedded design of MIMO based communication transceiver on a high cost board (having Xilinx FPGAs) and a separate RF board. The end product was intended to be used as training equipment in the communication labs by researchers working to MIMO system design. Our design team evaluated their design and hardware platform. Our evaluation showed that that the current hardware platform will be overkill as end application processing requirements were not so stringent. Another observation, from end user perspective, was that most of the communication researchers don’t have FPGA based hardware design expertise and current approach will definitely limit the scope of the end product. Renzym proposed the solution based on the general purpose processor (GPP), GNU Radio and USRP hardware. Result was that the same goal was realized at about one-tenth of the cost and much less development time. Furthermore now instead of FPGA based hardware design, end user would need to do all the development in C/C++ which not only reduces the development cycle but also offers more flexibility and ease of implementation. |
